One of our very own goes to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden this May! Twenty-three year old Gianluca Bezzina, a doctor of medicine and surgery with an infectious smile and a voice to be envious of, took the ticket to Malmö yesterday evening at the finals of the Malta Eurovision Song Contest 2013. His was an unlikely victory, as odds were stacked against him with Maltese sweetheart Kevin Borg in the final line up.
The song, ‘Tomorrow’, composed and written by Boris Cezek and Dean Muscat battled it out to the last minute with Kevin Borg’s ‘Needing You’. After losing the tele vote, Gianluca managed to garner top votes from all the jury members. The winning team made up of Gianluca, Gabriel Cassar (on bass and backing vocals), Kenny D’Ugo (ukelele and backing vocals), Christopher Tate (Drums), Louise Anne Bugeja Tate and Samaria Bezzina (backing vocals) took to the stage again to perform the entry which will be representing the country later on this year.
All the performers last night gave top notch renditions in a show which ran smoothly, without technical glitches. A huge well-done to all the participants for their efforts!
The Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Malmö, Sweden, following Loreen’s victory last year in Baku, Azerbaijan with her song ‘Euphoria’. Malta will be taking part in the second semi-final on Thursday 16 May hoping to rank in the top 10 on the night to perform again during Saturday’s final night on the 18 May. Gianluca is now Malta’s 26th representative to the Eurovision Song Contest, following in the footsteps of Kurt Calleja who represented the country last year.
Gianluca will be performing his winning song at the Malta Music Awards 2013 this evening.
I am sure I am speaking on behalf of all the cast and crew of Strummin’: Good luck on this new adventure! May the run-up to the contest and the event itself prove to be fruitful!
